What is the scheme?

After it was first announced in December’s pre-budget report, the government has now launched its boiler scrappage scheme. This initiative, which is run through the Energy Saving Trust (EST), has been designed to reduce the UK’s carbon emissions, and meanwhile cut energy bills for thousands of householders throughout the country.

The basis of the boiler scrappage scheme, London, is to encourage households with the lowest-efficiency boilers (G-rated) to upgrade to an A-rated boiler, by offering them a £400 voucher that goes towards the cost of the new boiler.

With the boiler scrappage scheme providing the helping hand of a £400 rebate, and with the promise of further savings once their old boiler has been replaced by a new and efficient model, it’s thought that many thousands of households will be taking the EST up on their offer.

According to the EST, new boilers run with an efficiency of at least 90%, so they use less fuel to produce the same amount of heat and so are cheaper to run. The EST claims that upgrading from a G-rated boiler to an A-rated boiler will save you an average of £235 on your heating bills each year. In other words you can knock a quarter off the cost of a year’s heating.

The UK government is committed to a challenging policy of carbon emission reduction, which has prompted the launch of the boiler scrappage scheme, London. Fourteen per cent of the UK’s carbon emissions are a result of domestic heating. It is thought that this initiative will mean up to 125,000 old and inefficient boilers will be replaced, saving approximately 140,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.

Is your household eligible for the boiler scrappage scheme?

Only G-rated boilers are included for replacement under the terms of the boiler scrappage scheme, London. If the pilot light on your boiler is permanently on, that’s a sign that it’s probably G-rated. Similarly, if it is a gas-fired boiler that is more than 15 years old or if it is oil-fired and over 25 years old, it is probably G-rated.

For householders under 60, their G-rated boiler should be their main boiler and must be in working order to be eligible. For those aged 60 and over, it must still be the main boiler but it does not have to be working.

Homeowners, private tenants and landlords are all eligible for the boiler scrappage scheme, London. However, social landlords, housing associations and boiler installers are not.

Applying for the boiler scrappage rebate

If you think you are eligible for the boiler scrappage voucher, you will need to arrange for a qualified boiler installer to provide you with a quote. Your full name
The address where the boiler upgrade will take place
Make and model of the old boiler
New boiler type
Details of the installer – company name, address and contact details
Confirmation that you have a quote or that your installer has visited the property

If everything is in order, your voucher will arrive within ten days of your application, and a voucher is valid for 12 weeks.

As the householder, you must pay for the work upfront and then send the invoice and the voucher to the EST. Within 25 days of the EST receiving your paperwork, you should receive your rebate.
